When did you start writing and why?
I began writing in the mid-1970s. I was bored just teaching and decided I wanted to go to acting school in New York City. It started out as a whim, but turned serious, quickly. The schools that I went to, Sylvia Leigh Showcase Theater, and Stella Adler’s, also taught screenwriting classes. Learning the craft, one on one, was awesome. I also participated in an acting showcase that happened to be in the middle of a winter blizzard. Needless to say the audience was not filled to capacity. I fell in love with the film medium and began writing screenplays up until the early 90s. I had written several feature films on spec and episodic’s for television, also on spec. I won’t mention the specific names here but just when my agent was getting my scripts into the shows, three of them went off the air in the same year.
Being a teacher, I was able to teach the craft of screenwriting and I had a large private practice in New York City for many years. I worked with newbie scriptwriters and some producers getting their scripts ready for production.
In the early 90s I began my journey into holistic healing and alternative therapies. I stopped film writing. Having to do so much writing for my courses and my dissertation took my time. I have been published in professional journals and have written articles in several therapies for my holistic healing web site.
I picked up novel writing in October 2011 when I was very bored down here in Central Florida. My first novel Gemini is completed and it is now being considered by publishers. I’m more than halfway through my second novel and I’m plotting my third which is another psych thriller.
What do you like best about writing?
I love escaping in my character’s minds and psychology. That is my background. And even my tagline, the mind behind the crime, says it best. I said it before, I like writing the bad girl. It allows me do things that I would not do in real life.
If you could go on a writing retreat where would you go and for how long?
I would definitely go to a beach. Natural waterways definitely stimulate my creativity and my writing could be very fluid on a beach. I’ve written many of my screenplays by the sea and even here in Florida I’m writing poolside. I can come with an idea and go home with a 1500 or more, word chapter.
For how long? That depends. I don’t like being away from civilization too long. I need my shopping.
So I hope you enjoy this blog and learned some new things about me along the way. Please feel free to leave questions and comments.
