What Do You #Blog About When You Have Nothing To Blog About? #amwriting #fiction

ronnie-288It’s not like me to go two weeks without blogging. But my time was not wasted. I’ve been spending an enormous amount of time writing Scorpio, the third novel in my series. I probably wrote over 5000 words this week in two chapters. For some writers, this is a minuscule amount.

As writers, we have to decide what to spend our time on. Marketing Gemini, through Facebook status update boosts and publications, has taken a large amount of my day. So the time I have to spend writing is lessened because of my marketing efforts. Posting an excerpt and link in Facebook groups can take an enormous amount of time. I prefer to pay for the sponsoring.

In addition to my writing and marketing I have also been making library appearances for meet and greets and book signings. This coming Wednesday, October 14 will be my last one in Citrus County at the Floral City library, 1:30 to 2:30 PM.

A couple of months ago, I decided because of all the help I’ve gotten on my journey toward publication, that I wanted to give back. I went to the Director of the activity center where I live and asked her if I could start a writing class for people who want to get their words onto paper, who are not already published, and to those who want to write seriously or for hobby. She grabbed on to the idea and I started my class which will run for seven weeks through November 14, on October 3. This coming Saturday, we’ll have our third session. We’ll take a holiday break on Nov. 14, and resume on Saturday, January 2.

I write my own curriculum as I have been doing for all of the courses that I have taught online nationwide and in my studio in NYC, for over 20 years that I’ve had my holistic healing practice. I’ve also created curriculum for the New York City Department of Education. I love teaching adult learners and this was my way of continuing to do this.

So what I’m finding on this page, is that I do have what to blog about. And this is my word of advice to everyone who says they don’t know what to write. Get out paper and a pen and start writing thoughts. What did you do today? How did you help yourself or others? What soaked up your time? How did you feel about that? One minute happening could be the start of something excellent.

A fellow in my class this weekend told me he was a blank slate and he didn’t have any ideas. I asked him what he wanted in this class. He said he wanted to be published. OK that is the first step. He’s serious. We started talking about character and I asked my students to think of a character that they would like to write in a novel. What characteristics do your hero, heroine, protagonist, antagonists have? As the class brainstormed, this fellow’s light bulb went on. I told them they have to come in with an open mind and be willing to absorb what we talk about. Again it’s taking the chance and risk and putting down words on paper.

The last few minutes of the class–I meant to take more time but it flew–I asked the students to write in a narrative their character’s traits. Low and behold, they all started writing! Words appeared on their paper that they didn’t know they had in them. That was a beautiful thing.

I referred back to the quote that I had written on the dry erase board. ‘I can fix a bad page. I can’t fix a blank one.’ Nora Roberts.

They got it.

So the bottom line message from this blog. Put your pen onto the paper and write your first thought.

Hope you enjoyed something a little out of the ordinary from me. Happy writing.
